You have probably heard on the news that a deadly Ebola outbreak is tearing through the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Cases have already been reported in Uganda, and neighbouring countries are at high risk. As of 27 May 2026, there have been:
- 240 deaths reported
- 120 laboratory-confirmed cases
- 1,000 suspected cases
And the numbers are growing fast.
Why this outbreak is so concerning?
With no approved vaccines or treatments for this specific strain, families living in extreme poverty are facing a terrifying reality. People already pushed to the limit in densely populated areas are vulnerable as the disease spreads.
Containing the spread of this virus is incredibly difficult. Violence and armed conflict in the region continue to drive displaced people away from their homes and across borders, accelerating the spread of the disease.
But with the right support – and your generosity – there’s a real chance this virus can be prevented from killing even more people. Tearfund, one of St James’ mission partners, is already responding to the outbreak and needs our support.
How Tearfund is responding?
Tearfund has a long history of working in the DRC. And they’ve responded to outbreaks of Ebola in the past. Right now, Tearfund and their local partners are installing hand-washing stations of clean water at critical health centres and border points. They’re also mobilising a network of local church leaders to spread life-saving medical advice and healthy hygiene habits with their communities.
What can we do?
Jesus’ love leads us to places of extreme suffering. He doesn’t look away, and neither can we.
There will be an opportunity to give towards the Tearfund Ebola appeal at the Sunday morning and evening service on 31st May and on 7th June. Donations can be by cash or card. You can also give through the church office during the week, or by clicking on the following link:
